Hamilton wins poll position at Spoty

LEWIS HAMILTON was last night named BBC Sports Personalit­y of the Year for the second time.

Hamilton claimed a record-equalling seventh Formula One world title this year, and had been the favourite for the main award. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson finished in second place, with jockey Hollie Doyle in third.

The Team of the Year award went to Liverpool, who claimed their first league title in 30 years. Their manager Jurgen Klopp was named Coach of the Year. Klopp said on stage: ‘Getting this award in Manchester makes it even sweeter.’

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford (below) was given the Expert Panel Special Award for his work to raise awareness of child food poverty. He said: ‘If it was a 100 metre race, I started 50m behind everybody else. I’ve always had this thing that eats at me saying, “Make sure you make a difference for the next generation”.’

Diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, 16 picked up the Young Spoty award.

Met Police officer Sgt Matt Ratana, who was killed on duty this year, was posthumous­ly awarded the Unsung Hero award. Sgt Ratana was head coach at East Grinstead rugby club.

Captain Tom Moore, 100, who became a national hero when he raised £39million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, won the Helen Rollason award.

The Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero award went to nine-year-old Tobias Weller, who has cerebral palsy and autism, and raised more than £137,000 by walking two marathons this year.
