Our Brexit negotiators are a bunch of wet fish

-

For four years Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the ERG (European Research Group of Eurosceptic MPs) have wanted a no-deal Brexit and now Johnson is running down the clock so he can blame the EU (Metro, Mon).

UK consumers could have supported British fishermen for 40 years by ensuring wet fish shops still existed. But by only buying fish from supermarkets supplied by Iceland and Norway (processed in Poland), plus Vietnam (catfish and king prawns), the death of UK-caught fish was assured.

So now, with about two thirds of UKcaught seafood being sold to the EU, if WTO tariffs were applied, we would see the demise of the UK fish market. Well done, you lousy negotiators!

As Theresa May said, ‘No deal is better than a bad deal.’ The EU’s attitude is why we wanted to leave in the first place. We should leave with no deal. Yes, there will be teething troubles, but we’ll get over that. If we make a bad deal, we’re stuck with it. Let’s do it on our own terms. Irene, via email

Far from being the bully, Andy claims (MetroTalk, Fri) the EU stands up

to bullies and wrongdoers more widely. An example would be its clamping down on environmental cheating by German car manufacturer Volkswagen.

The British government can be seen as trying to rob continental fishermen of the rights British fishermen sold at a fair price. Charles, Mitcham

■ Let’s just get on with the necessary installation of border and duty controls. The EU is running us down to the wire in the vain hope we will capitulate and let them keep control and interference in UK businesses. Gordon, Staines-Upon-Thames
