Alexa, showw me me... the Super Bowl’s ad break superhero

- By Nick Metcalfe

HE HAS already been voted sexiest man alive... and now Michael B Jordan is king of the Super Bowl commercials.

The Black Panther hunk had the most-watched advert on YouTube during a night of surprise cameos.

Timothée Chalamet and Bruce Springsteen were among the A-listers in TV ads debuted during America’s biggest sporting event on Sunday.

But as intrigued fans sought out the slots online, the one attracting most views was Jordan’s turn playing the ‘ideal body’ for Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa.

In second place was a commercial for Jeep, which featured Springsteen in an idealistic ode to healing

America’s divisions and focusing on common ideals.

Completing the top three was fellow car company Cadillac, which created a Edward Scissorhands-themed advert.

It starred Winona Ryder – from the original film – and Chalamet as Edward, who discovers the joys of handsfree cruise control.

Two movie trailers made the list, Marvel’s The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and Coming 2 America.

No expense was spared as brands paid up to $5.5million (£4million) for a 30-second TV slot. Viewership of the ads on YouTube while the game was still on rose by more than 70 per cent from last year.

IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL DESPITE THE PANDEMIC

THERE was a crowd of 25,000 watching the big game at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, among them 7,500 vaccinated health workers, who were given free tickets. The rest of the seats were occupied by cardboard cut-outs to make it look full. It struck me future generations watching footage of this game might well forget it took place during the coronavirus pandemic. It really did look like a normal Super Bowl from a television-watching perspective. The half-time show from The Weeknd was a typically slick affair, and the celebrations after the game were certainly not toned down. It all had a very businessas-usual feel.
