AND ANOTHER THING...

- David Lambert, Southminster

At long last! A real prison tariff – up to ten years to those thinking about breaking the law, in this case whether they have travelled here from a redlist Covid country (MetroTalk, Fri).

With the recent fatal stabbings, now is the time to start getting tough on those who regularly carry offensive weapons. It is time to get rid of this culture of ‘don’t be a naughty boy’ with token, slap-on-the-wrist prison sentences (if any). This country has a knife problem, now is the time to act.

G Bailey says any day of remembrance for Covid key workers will seem like a ‘kick in the teeth’ to the unacknowledged many who have lost livelihoods during the pandemic and the young, whose future has been ‘destroyed’ (MetroTalk, Thu). This is like saying World War II soldiers should not be honoured because some people died in the Blitz.

l agree with Nick about unwelcome political interference in the NHS (MetroTalk, Wed). The same goes for education. I’m 74 and every election has been about saving both.

For example, Clinical Commissioning Groups, set up in 2013 to administer local surgery needs, have shown their nationwide differences during the vaccine rollout. Some small villages have huge surgeries, while towns have tiny facilities. And depending on which surgery you’re with, people in the same street are offered different facilities. It’s time to level the playing field.
