Height of stupidity! Couple take child to camp on cliff’s edge
A COUPLE with a child have been branded ‘brain dead’ for wild camping just feet from a deadly drop.
Photographs show their tent perilously close to an estimated 666ft fall on the Cleveland Way, a trail in northern England. Staithes coastguard sent officers to give them a safety warning and tell them about huge landslips in the area recently. North Yorkshire police also sent an officer due to their breach of coronavirus rules, as camping is not allowed until April 12. It is not known if they were fined £200.
The couple were later slammed on social media for their risky outing.
One person wrote: ‘Beggar’s (sic) belief! You can see where the ground is partially broken! Brain dead.’
Another wrote: ‘ Terrifying! The kid must have (been) petrified in a camp very close to the edge. They need to be severely punished for this!’
The incident comes just weeks after a rescue volunteer was left paralysed from the neck down when he fell 500ft while aiding two Covid rulebreakers.
Chris Lewis, 60, and other volunteers had been called out when two wild campers got into trouble in the Lake District. Mountain Rescue is now crowdfunding for his care, with donations at around £826,000 last night.
