GLOBE WINNER EMMA PAYS TRIBUTE TO PRINCESS OF WALES FOR HER ‘COMPASSION’

-

JOSH O’CONNOR might be her very own Prince Charming, but it was Princess Diana who Emma Corrin thanked for her triumph at the Golden Globes.

The 25-year-old star of The Crown paid tribute to Diana’s ‘compassion and empathy’ as she received the gong for best actress in a television series. O’Connor, 30, who played Prince Charles, was awarded the best actor prize.

Corrin made her debut as the young Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997, in the fourth season of the Netflix hit.

Accepting the accolade at Sunday’s virtual awards ceremony, she said: ‘Thank you most of all so much to Diana, you’ve taught me compassion and empathy beyond any measure I could ever mention. On behalf of everyone who remembers you so wonderfully and passionately in our hearts, thank you.’

The newcomer – who was visibly shocked by her win – offered up a string of ‘thank you’ messages. She gushed: ‘Thank you, thank you so much for this incredible honour.

‘Thank you to my incredible cast and crew for being by my side, thank you to my prince charming Josh, I could not have done this without you, thank you for making every day a complete joy.

‘Thank you so much to my incredible team as well, I don’t know where I’d be without you.’

Corrin beat her costar Olivia Colman who made her final appearance as the

Queen in the last series. However Colman, 47, did scoop the prize last year, for playing the monarch.

The other Golden Globe best actress nominees were Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Laura Linney (Ozark) and Sarah Paulson (Ratched). The Crown was the big winner at this year’s bash, taking away four awards, including the prestigious best television drama series.

Gillian Anderson won best supporting actress in a television drama for her portrayal of prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

The 78th annual ceremony, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, was staged in both New York and Los Angeles, with the winners accepting remotely.

IT’S Emily In... the back garden. Lily Collins didn’t need a red carpet to dazzle at the Golden Globes. She lit up the event from her Hollywood pad, wearing a retro-inspired cutaway gown.

Perhaps it was just as well the Emily In Paris star couldn’t attend in person after her Marmite comedy-drama was ruthlessly mocked by Globes hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Lily, 31, lost to Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara in the category for best actress in a television series – musical or comedy.

Tina, 50, joked she ‘couldn’t wait’ to find out which category Lily’s Netflix show came under.

In any case the actress, who is engaged to film writer Charlie McDowell, was happy to make the most of her backyard after flogging her four-bedroom Beverly Hills mansion for $13.5million (£9.7million) – up a million and a half on what she paid for it five years ago.
