Donut call us plain! Jane’s fury at M&S name shame
PAINED Jane Hudson sparked a social media row with Marks & Spencer after finding a new £1 yumnuts treat she had just enjoyed was called... Plain Jane.
The mum of three bought a pack of the vanilla-flavoured cakes – launched last year – and ‘thought they were very tasty’ until one of her children pointed out its name. Jane, 52, said: ‘My 23-yearold thought it was hilarious. I said, “I think that’s disgusting.” ’
She went online to protest: ‘Feeling a little annoyed. Are they implying Janes are plain? NOT HAPPY!
‘They wouldn’t call them Crummy Karen because of all the abuse Karens get. In this day and age why does M&S feel they need to do it? It’s the 21st century and name calling isn’t OK.’
Surprisingly, Jane got little support. Carole Barlow wrote: ‘You aren’t a Plain
Jane, I’m not a Christmas carol. Why do people get offended about everything these days? Life’s too short.’
Debbie Eibbed posted: ‘Try being Debbie. Did I do Dallas or am I a downer?’ Susan Fleming wrote: ‘Try being a Lazy Susan!’ And Karen Willis advised: ‘I’ve
found if you laugh with people calling you names they laugh and love you.’
Even a fellow Jane – Edwards – wrote: ‘I’m a plain Jane and proud of it. It’s how I describe the spelling of my name. Anybody or anything lucky enough to be called this should be very pleased with themselves!’ Someone else pointed out: ‘I don’t hear Colins moaning about caterpillars.’ But Jane said: ‘You name an animal – it’s different when it comes to a doughnut.’
Complainer Jane, from Waltham Abbey, Essex, added: ‘I don’t consider myself plain. Personally I think I’m quite fabulous.’
But she admitted: ‘My kids think I’m totally bonkers.
‘My son now walks around calling me a doughnut. And my daughter says I’ve got too much time on my hands.’
M&S has not commented.
