Step-father is charged with murdering little Logan, 5
THE step-father of a five-year-old found dead in a river has been charged with his murder – as the boy’s mother also appeared in court.
John Cole, 39, of Bridgend, appeared before magistrates in Cardiff yesterday accused of killing Logan Mwangi, also known as Logan Williamson, and perverting the course of justice.
The youngster was found in the river Ogmore in Sarn, Bridgend, on Saturday after police were called to reports of a missing child. He was confirmed dead in hospital.
Care worker Cole appeared in court in a grey prison tracksuit and spoke only to confirm his name and address.
Logan’s mother Angharad Williamson and a boy of 13, who cannot be named, appeared in another hearing charged with perverting the course of justice.
Williamson, 30, hung her head during the hearing, which was told her son had multiple injuries including a torn liver, an internal head wound and broken collarbone when he was found just 400 yards from the flat where he lived.
Cole and Williamson had become engaged less than three months ago, and Logan was due to be their pageboy.
Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Mark O’Shea said: ‘This is a very harrowing case for all involved and I extend my deepest sympathies to Logan’s family and friends.
‘This remains an extensive and sensitive investigation and I am grateful to the local community for its support and understanding while we have continued to gather evidence. We continue to appeal to anyone who has information.’
Young friends of Logan have been among those leaving hundreds of flowers, cards, and toys at a bridge nearby.
Cole and Williamson were remanded in custody, and the teenager to local authority care. All three are set to appear at Newport crown court today.
