Nuno: Own goals not keeping Harry here

- By MATTHEW NASH

NUNO ESPIRITO Santo believes Harry Kane has not agreed to remain at Tottenham for ‘selfish’ reasons and admitted the England captain could make his first start of the season tonight.

Kane announced yesterday he will be staying at Spurs – for now – and after coming on as a substitute in Sunday’s Premier League win at Wolves, he could play from the start against Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League.

Nuno described the striker, who had appeared likely to sign for Manchester City after declaring his intention to leave this summer, as an ‘option’ for the home play-off, second-leg tie in which his side are 1-0 down.

The 28-year-old is second on Spurs’ alltime goalscorers’ list on 221, 45 behind Jimmy Greaves, but Nuno is sure Kane is staying for

the team and revealed he did not feel he had to talk him round.

‘All players have targets and individual records to break but all inside of the team,’ he said. ‘I don’t see any kind of player being selfish to consider individual situations, it’s (all) inside of the team.

‘I don’t think I have to convince anyone. What I have to do with all is find solutions to make the players better and help the team compete in a good way like we are doing.’

The boss says he still has ‘decisions to make’ for the Pacos tie and Sunday’s topflight clash with Watford, and would not comment on reports midfielder Tanguy Ndombele wants to leave.

Cristian Romero is set for his full home debut tonight and goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini – also on loan from Atalanta – hailed the centre-back’s qualities.

‘He’s a very quiet guy but on the pitch he’s an animal. He can become one of the best centre-backs in the world,’ he said.
