The most expensive holiday of Raab’s life

-

■ Foreign secretary Dominic Raab did not know how many Brits remain in Afghanistan or how many guards who protected our embassy staff were left behind to face their fate (Metro, Thu).

Appearing before the foreign affairs select committee, he could not recall any conversations with Afghan, Pakistani or, incredibly, British ambassadors in the region. He has never visited the region and was perplexed by a report from his own department on July 22 warning of a swift Taliban advance. Asked 11 times, he refused to divulge his holiday dates. His failings resulted in more than 900 UK troops being flown in to deal with the chaos that ensued, yet he refused to apologise to them and, in fact, the only regret he admitted to was going on holiday.

Like the rest of this government, he is not fit for purpose but will remain in post because prime minister Boris Johnson is weak and lazy. Steve, Reading

■ When Boris decides to spend more time with his hairdresser, Raab is now unlikely to replace him as party leader. Crete will be the most expensive holiday he ever takes. A Nelson, London

■ When Stuart Glass (MetroTalk, Thu) says ‘we are not interested’ in Afghan refugees and don’t want them in this country, I’m happy to say he isn’t speaking for me or anyone I know. If that’s your opinion, have the guts to say ‘I’m not interested and I don’t want them here’. Don’t hide behind others who don’t share your selfish views. Simon, London
