AWARDS HOST JOEL: IT WAS A DREAM TO MEET COLEEN...

-

JOEL DOMMETT will go easy on the guests when he hosts his first National TV Awards tonight – as the celeb fan admitted he gets starstruck by Coleen Rooney.

In a warm-up chat with Guilty Pleasures, the Masked Singer host said he won’t machinegun the audience like Ricky Gervais, but is nervous of who he might run into.

After mingling with David Beckham and Robbie Williams at Soccer Aid, the I’m A Celeb star confessed: ‘It’s mad. You get really starstruck by the oddest people.

‘One of the people at the Soccer Aid party I was so starstruck by was Coleen Rooney. I couldn’t believe I was in the same room as Coleen Rooney.

‘She is so lovely. It’s someone you don’t expect to meet.’

After former host David Walliams was mauled by critics for inappropriate Caroline Flack gags, Dommett insists he is Mr Nice Guy. ‘I’m not trying to be anyone I am not,’ said the 36-year-old. ‘It’s become this weird thing, this sort of like pressure on the opening monologue to be this harsh thing where you jump into everyone.

‘That has its place. People like Ricky Gervais do that so perfectly at the Golden Globes. The NTAs is almost like a slightly different beast. It’s just a bit more fluffy.’ Dommett also doesn’t want to get above himself, cautioning: ‘There are a lot of people who certainly don’t conduct themselves in the right way in this industry. You’ve just got to try your best to treat it like a normal job.’ And he’s not miffed he wasn’t nominated for The Masked Singer – declaring his hosting gig ‘its own nomination and its own award’. Watch the NTAs at 7.30pm tonight on ITV.
