Q&A Alex Yee

- Interview by Matthew Nash Alex Yee is a New Balance athlete

What are your reflections on the Tokyo Games?

I can close my eyes and run you through both races stroke for stroke and stride for stride. At the moment, it’s been on to the next thing. I haven’t afforded myself the luxury of sitting back and reflecting but I am looking forward to that day when I can do that at the end of the year.

What has life been like since Japan?

It’s been bizarre – full of new experiences – but at the same time it has been exactly the same. I’ve had my head down in training for a fair bit and had the London Super League recently, where I finished fifth. You’re trying to enjoy what you have achieved while doing what you’re doing. Now I hope I can take up some of the opportunities that have been offered to me.

Is it a life-changing experience to win a couple of Olympic medals?

I never know what to say when I am asked that because it is something you never really think about leading up to it. I’m just living my life and the fact I have got this far is amazing. I still feel like I am a child of the sport and that I’m still learning, still hustling. That is how I feel I will get the best out of myself.

There is an excellent mural dedicated to you near your south London home. Was that a surprise?

The mural is insane, I still can’t believe it is real. I come back to Brockley now and even the pizza man over the road from where the mural is recognised me. You don’t realise the impact you can have on the local community until you go back. I feel pleased I could put Brockley on the map.

What’s next for you?

I’m down to do all the Super League events (Munich, Jersey and Malibu). At the end of that series, I’ll probably take some downtime and have two weeks off training. I’m hoping I can go on holiday. I want to go and see my family and friends in London. I’m looking forward to having everyone in the same room so I can say thank you.
