PREMIER LEAGUE
GAME OF THE WEEK
LIVERPOOL V TOTTENHAM SUNDAY, 4.30PM, SKY SPORTS
IT’S A game of what-if and what-still-justabout-might-be as Liverpool fans arrive at Anfield for the penultimate time under Jurgen Klopp’s leadership.
When the ledger is closed on the Klopp era the good will overwhelmingly outweigh the bad and the anguished collapse of the last few weeks will be largely forgotten. But, for now, Liverpool are still living in the painful moment which will be defined by the sad sight of the iconic manager arguing on the touchline with his most influential star.
Whether Mohamed Salah starts here will be seen as a significant decision by his boss either way but, ultimately, it matters little. The chance of a fairytale ending for Klopp has gone and all that is left for Liverpool is to say thanks and goodbye and hope Arne
Slot can fill his incredibly charismatic shoes. Ange Postecoglou is also looking to next season, with the Spurs boss consistently batting away questions about Champions League qualification by insisting his only interest is in building a team capable of challenging for the title next term.
In one sense, the Australian has got his wish, with defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal meaning Spurs’ chances of finishing fourth are no longer in their own hands.
Postecoglou’s commitment to front-foot football has got the pulses racing while at the same time revealing some regular flaws. The good thing is many of them are fixable.
While the sight of Cristian Romero, charging out of defence to lead the press, claim possession and score a goal – as the Argentine did against Arsenal – can be thrilling, a basic failure to defend corners – which Spurs twice illustrated against the Gunners – is not. Fix that and Postecoglou could be on to something. Otherwise, Spurs will remain just another ‘what-if’.
