Hard-hitting play tackles tough conversations
The New Venture Theatre, Bedford Place, Hove offers Nina Raine’s Consent, the second production in its vibrant 2021-22 season. Spokesman Aldo Oliver Henriquez said: “Originally staged in 2017 at the National Theatre, this intricately constructed, philosophical, drama uses the template of a classic Greek tragedy, within a modern context, to draw the audience into its presentday world of barristers – from courtroom to bedroom. “We see the devastating impact that their everyday relationships and sexual politics have on the people around them and the clients they represent. With a darkly comic tone, feelings of vengeance and justice are buried within unapologetic jokes of vaginal births and victim’s impact statements. Empathy is hard to find.” Aldo added: “The New Venture Theatre is at the forefront of award-winning independent venues in the south and is proud to be showcasing this hard-hitting morality tale about opposing truths. The play invites the audience to make their own judgements and, through the writer’s smart and direct choice of language, resonates heavily today, helping to keep some fundamentally important conversations alive.” Nina Raine said: “Post
Weinstein, in the era of #MeToo, this play certainly has an extra vibration humming through it. I wouldn’t say it’s completely on message… I don’t think a play should just be a cheerleader for things. I think it should air issues, not tie them up neatly with a bow.” Due to adult themes the show is not suitable for under-18s. Consent will run from Friday, November 5 to Saturday, November 13, including a matinee on Sunday, November 7. Evening performances start at 7.45pm and the matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets £9 for NVT members and £10 nonmembers through the NVT website.”
