Progress on cladding crisis is encouraging
In very good news, the Housing Secretary set out our landmark new plan to protect leaseholders and make the industry pay up for the long-running cladding crisis. This plan will mean the industry will be given two months to agree to a financial contributions scheme to fund the updated plan, otherwise, if necessary, the government will impose a solution in law. He also guaranteed no leaseholder living in their own flat will have to pay a penny to fix unsafe cladding. I’ve been raising constituents’ fears about this crisis with ministers, so I do hope this comes as welcome news to everyone who has previously been in touch.
It’s still crucial everyone comes forward to get their booster jabs, and the government has now launched an additional campaign to encourage pregnant women to ‘Get Boosted
Now’, which will share testimonies of pregnant women who have had the jab on radio and social media, reassuring pregnant women vaccinations provide the best protection for both them and their babies. The consequences of Covid-19 when someone is pregnant are potentially devastating – including the increased possibility of premature birth, admission to intensive care and a heightened risk of stillbirth – so please come forward to receive this safe, effective booster dose. Meanwhile, it was tremendous to have the Chancellor find time for a recent flying visit to Clair Hall to thank staff and volunteers for their ongoing dedication.
It was encouraging to see we’ve published our response to the Protect Duty consultation launched in the wake of the tragic 2017 Manchester Arena Bombing, which outlines a key ‘protect duty’, which will place a legal requirement for venues to put in place public safety measures without placing excessive burdens on small businesses. We will bring forward legislation on this at the earliest opportunity. These measures will help to improve security around the country, protecting us all and our way of life.
On January 27, 2022, the Holocaust Educational Trust will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day, the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi death and concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
