Double delight for Albion player of year Cucurella

Marc Cucurella was named both Men’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season at a ceremony held at the Amex last Tuesday, which was attended by 400 players, guests and sponsors.

“It doesn’t feel possible to win these two awards!” said Marc. “I’m very happy and thank you to my teammates, the gaffer, coaches and of course the fans for your support. You have all made it very easy for me and my family to adapt to a new country and I have enjoyed this season so much.

“The highlight? Scoring on Saturday against Manchester United was unbelievab­le.”

Cucurella was also the pick from the local media. The Athletic, BBC Sussex, and the Brighton Indy also giving the Spaniard the verdict. Johnny Cantor from BBC Sussex said: “He has consistent­ly been the best performer for the team and he has played in a variety of positions. He has managed to adapt to the Premier League exceptiona­lly quickly.”

The Men’s Young Player of the Seasonwent to Jeremy Sarmiento, the exciting Ecuador internatio­nal who has broken into the first-team squad this season.

He said, “I really appreciate the support of everyone at the club. It has been a hard journey to come from Portugal but the players and staff have made it easier. My first season and making my Premier League debut were really special and I am honoured to win this award.”

Another popular winner came in the Men’s Goal of the Season award, which was given to midfielder Enock Mwepu for his stunning strike against Liverpool in the 2-2 draw at Anfield last October. Enock said, “I always dreamed of scoring in the Premier and to score at Anfield was beautiful .”
