“Thankfully, as a team we didn’t let them score. It’s nice to challenge yourself against the best players.

“I think we dominated throughout the game.

“We’ve been waiting for one of these games to come all season. We showed what we were about.”

Looking ahead to next season, Dunk said Albion have ‘got more than enough’ to challenge higher in the table, as long as they keep the squad together.

“We are in a good place,” he said.

“We want to keep our squad together and maybe improve it. Let’s see what happens in the summer.

“We know we are more than capable to keep pushing on each year. You are not going to win every game and you have to stick together in the tough times.

“We did that and got out the end of it. We all get on well together and are on the same journey.”

Man United Interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted Brighton & Hove Albion caused Manchester United ‘big problems’ in their heavy 4-0 loss at the Amex on Saturday evening.

For United, the loss ensured that they will not qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League and will finish the season with their lowest-ever Premier League points tally.

Speaking after the defeat, Rangnick said: “We had big problems with their width through their wing-backs, we couldn’t stop their wingbacks as they were always pretty high and wide.

“For us it was whenever they played the diagonal ball we struggled with those balls although we told our fullbacks that they should get out earlier.

“It was very, very difficult to stop them in the first half at all and in the second half we took the risk to bring Edi [Cavani] on as a second striker and Fred and went to a 4-4-2.

“In hindsight it was maybe a little bit of a risk to play a 4-42 against them, but we had to try and change the energy. Today we were second best in all relevant areas.”
