Heath and Cuckfield start with victories

-

Haywards Heath went to Mayfield to get their Sussex League division two campaign started.

Heath were inserted but on a good wicket Jonny Phelps and Jethro Menzies put the Mayfield opening attack to the sword to race to 75-0.

Phelps hit 52 and Ben Matthew joined Menzies.

Menzies was dismissed for 72 but Heath moved to 205/2. A break reduced the game to 43 overs a side and James Caddick fell for 14 but impressive Matthew ended on 72 not out and he was supported by skipper Callum Smith with 32 not out in a total of 277/3. Mayfield were set 284 from 43 overs.

Rob Raymond and Harry Lloyd batted aggressively but Phelps snared Raymond for 28. Lloyd built a partnership with Rob Sharma but tight bowling from skipper Smith and Sam Parsons built pressure and and Phelps removed Lloyd for 51, leaving Mayfield 138/2. Sharma soon followed.

Jemeul Cabey proved hard to score off and late wickets for Caddick 2/28 and Dan Gee 2/9 wrapped up victory with Mayfield finishing on 233/8.

Burgess Hill v Cuckfield Cuckfield started life in Division 2 with a comfortable sixwicket win at Burgess Hill.

Hill decided to bat first and against Greg Wisdom and Charlie Douglas-Hughes, they reached 43 off ten overs.

Josh Hayward and returning Nipun Karunanayake bowled well and Cuckfield stayed on top. Douglas-Hughes and Ollie Graham had success as Hill were restricted to 184-7.

Cuckfield’s target was 180 off 41 overs. Cambridge, Dominic Sear and Graham all chipped in but Karunanayake’s 87 not out led Cuckfield home with ease.
