Szczesny’s rocket for ‘childish’ Ars flops

- By MIKE MCGRATH

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY branded Arsenal “childish” after their latest defeat – and admits the side desperately need Thierry Henry.

The Gunners have recovered from their shocking start to the season but dropped FIVE points over Christmas.

Drawing with Wolves and losing at Fulham has got Arsene Wenger moaning again about referees.

Disaster

Szczesny also reckons the Gunners have been knackered over the festive fixtures – but at least fans have got the return of club legend Henry (right) to look forward to.

He could play against Leeds in the FA Cup at the weekend when Arsenal look to bounce back from their Craven Cottage disaster.

“He’s quality,” said goalkeeper Szczesny.

“He’s a great finisher and he’s very clever, very intelligent, plus he’s a great figure to have in the dressing room.

“He helps all the players off the pitch, as well as on the pitch, so it’s great to have him in the dressing room.

“Hopefully, it will be done and confirmed as soon as possible because we need him.”

Wenger’s lads were leading Fulham until five minutes from time – then Steve Sidwell and Bobby Zamora scored to nick it for the Cottagers.

The Gunners were not helped by Johan Djourou’s sending-off, which left Wenger fuming with the ref again. “It was very confusing,” said Szczesny.

“I thought for 85 minutes we defended really well with 11 men and they never looked like scoring.

“Then we had to play with 10 men, they looked very dangerous.

“We played 48 hours earlier and then we went one man down and played with 10 men.

“There was probably some tired legs but I think probably we should have kept the concentration and kept the focus and we would have been fine.

“But I would imagine it was a very childish performance in the end from us.

Shocked

“I’m very disappointed with the result, but hopefully we can recover as soon as possible.”

Szczesny was shocked by the fatigue in players as he felt it would have been a problem for Fulham and rivals for a Champions League place – NOT Arsenal.

“The fixtures comes think and fast and players get tired,” added Szczesny.

“These kind of results can happen.”
