The first winter drought in 20 years has got farmers worried that they could be facing a spud shortage this year.
And experts are now warning that it could send prices spiralling – making a British teatime staple a luxury.
Meurig Raymond, deputy president of the National Farmers Union and himself a potato grower said the weather meant farmers will avoid planting the crop.
He added: “Planting a high value crop like potatoes if the rains don’t come is like Russian Roullette.”
Exeter University professor Steve Mccorriston agreed, saying: “Drought will most likely force prices up.”
