AN EX-RAF serviceman has been branded a “disgrace” after he PEED on a war memorial.
Police caught Colin Smith ( above) as he urinated on monument in Victory Square, Hartlepool – which displays the names of hundreds of war dead.
The 47-year-old told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court he had been out watching a band in the town and decided to “toddle off home”.
Becoming desperate to use a toilet, Smith claims he was unable to find one and weed on the war memorial.
Chairman of the bench, Joan Fenwick said: “Of all the people, I wouldn’t have expected you to have done that. It was disgraceful.”
Hartlepool-born Smith, who now lives in Exeter and has family still living in the north-east costal town, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly on Feb 4.
Smith, of Whimple, Exeter, was fined £115, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
