AN EX-RAF serviceman has been branded a “dis­grace” af­ter he PEED on a war me­mo­rial.

Po­lice caught Colin Smith ( above) as he uri­nated on mon­u­ment in Vic­tory Square, Hartle­pool – which dis­plays the names of hun­dreds of war dead.

The 47-year-old told Hartle­pool Mag­is­trates’ Court he had been out watch­ing a band in the town and de­cided to “tod­dle off home”.

Be­com­ing des­per­ate to use a toi­let, Smith claims he was un­able to find one and weed on the war me­mo­rial.

Chair­man of the bench, Joan Fen­wick said: “Of all the peo­ple, I wouldn’t have ex­pected you to have done that. It was dis­grace­ful.”

Hartle­pool-born Smith, who now lives in Ex­eter and has fam­ily still liv­ing in the north-east costal town, pleaded guilty to be­ing drunk and dis­or­derly on Feb 4.

Smith, of Whim­ple, Ex­eter, was fined £115, or­dered to pay £85 costs and a £15 vic­tim sur­charge.
