One of Bri­tain’s worst se­rial killers, he ad­mit­ted at­tack­ing and killing five ex­treme S&M en­thu­si­asts he had met in a London pub ( left) in 1993.

Ire­land was one of the rel­a­tively few criminals in Bri­tish jails for whom “life means life” – mean­ing he was never to be re­leased and would die be­hind bars. FOR­MER sol­dier Colin Ire­land – con­victed of tor­tur­ing gay men to death al­most 20 years ago – died in jail last week.

Ire­land, 57, is thought to have died from nat­u­ral causes in the health­care cen­tre of top se­cu­rity Wake­field Prison in West York­shire.
