Posties’ chem­i­cal scare

MORE than 100 work­ers were quar­an­tined for four hours af­ter a ma­jor chem­i­cal alert at a Royal Mail sort­ing of­fice.

Po­lice, fire­fight­ers and paramedics were called to the build­ing af­ter an un­known sub­stance was de­tected. It is be­lieved a ra­di­a­tion alarm sounded in the build­ing’s load­ing bay and chem­i­cal traces picked up by a hand­held de­vice.

All 120 work­ers at the site were evac­u­ated to the car park till 8pm, when they were told it was safe to go.

Spe­cial­ists were last night still in­ves­ti­gat­ing.
