You won’t see Ceefax again
TV text service Ceefax took its final bow last night as it succumbed to the final stage of the UK’s switch to digital television broadcasts.
The world’s first teletext service finally ended after 38 years on the BBC when Olympic champion Dame Mary Peters switched off analogue transmissions in Northern Ireland.
Launched in 1974, Ceefax gave viewers the chance to check the latest headlines, weather forecasts and TV listings in a pre-internet era where the only alternative was to wait for the next bulletin to be shown.
