Somme idiot’s dug up pitch!

THE hunt is on for a human mole looking for buried treasure who’s been digging up a town’s playing fields, leaving it looking like “the Somme”.

Hundreds of small craters, holes and piles of earth have made the recreation ground in unplayable for footballers and other sports fans, and dangerous for people walking their dogs.

The mole has also been unearthing the grounds of a community centre and a school’s sixth form centre, apparently scouring the ground with a metal detector, digging up his finds and not bothering to fill in the holes.

Now town leaders in Thornbury, Glos, have determined to identify the culprit and bring him or her to justice.

Town clerk Judith Payne said: “Somebody could trip on one of the holes. It’s dangerous.”
