PENNY-PINCHING WENGER MAKING FANS MAD AGAIN

- By JON WEST

Rooney away from Old Trafford.

Over at Everton, the Toffees have become annoyed with Arsenal’s attempts to sign Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgian has a £23m release clause in his contract, but the Gunners only want to pay £20m.

Another strike target, Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, looks like going to Manchester City, who don’t mess around when it comes to shelling out for players.

Gunners fans would be happy to see Wenger make a big-money move for Christian Benteke, who has handed in a transfer request at Aston Villa.

But with Chelsea also in the frame, they fear Roman Abramovich will steam in and get there first – just as he did two years ago with Juan Mata.

Dithering

Arsenal are also in for Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry – but his arrival won’t spark joyous parties in north London.

The list of players Wenger failed to sign because of his dithering is endless – and includes Cristiano Ronaldo and Yaya Toure.

Not landing

latest target Higuain after weeks of negotiations would be a huge blow to Wenger’s reputation.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed the deal is far from complete.

He said: “We don’t want Higuain to leave and, what’s more, no-one from Arsenal has come to us and made any offers.”

New Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, who replaced Jose Mourinho, is also understood to be keen for Higuain to stay.

That means the pressure is now well and truly on Wenger to sign a top name – or he will be facing the fans’ wrath yet again.
