AN astonishing row over an innocent joke about Jessica Ennis-Hill’s bum by BBC sports presenter Colin Murray has erupted.
The BBC has again been picked on by the Government for ‘sexist’ sports coverage after Murray told last weekend’s Anniversary Games crowd at the Olympic Stadum that London 2012 golden girl medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill had the ultimate bottom.
Culture Secretary Maria Miller is to write to BBC DirectorGeneral Tony Hall – just weeks after she wrote whingeing about John Inverdale saying that Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli was “never going to be a looker like Sharapova”.
One Westminster insider told the Midweek Sport: “She is not renowned for her sense of humour. It seems she gets her gander up at the slighest thing these days.”
A spokesman for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport added: “Maria Miller has been clear she wants to see more media coverage of top women’s sport, more women on sports boards and more women participating at the grassroots.
“Recent sexist comments from high-profile commentators focusing on sportswomen’s appearances rather than sporting prowess are not acceptable and show that there is still much work to be done.”
A capacity crowd of 80,000 at the Olympic Stadium on Friday roared with laughter as Murray told them the ultimate athlete would have “the stamina of Mo (Farah), the speed of (Usain) Bolt, the leap of (Greg) Rutherford and the bottom of Jess Ennis”.
The comments were not even broadcast by the BBC.
Murray, 36, is likely to be unmoved – he’s off to join Talksport after being ousted as Match of the Day 2 host.
“One radio analyst said: “The good news for Colin is that Talksport has a much more liberal attitude than Ms Miller.
“And it doesn’t see the need to apoligise every five minutes like the BBC does at the moment.”
