YOUTH CLUB BOSS SACKED FOR SEX WITH GIRL,16
A COMMUNITY leader has been SACKED after claims he had sex with a 16-year-old girl who attended his youth club.
Steve Toomey ran clubs for up to 200 youngsters aged eight to 19 in Hull and volunteered at Courts FC, a boys’ football club.
But he was dismissed on August 13 after telling a disciplinary hearing he had sex with the teenager, it has been claimed.
It is understood the parents of the girl discovered communications between her and Mr Toomey – who is believed to be in his 50s – and contacted police.
Tony Fee, secretary of Courts Community Association which employed Mr Toomey, said his behaviour amounted to gross misconduct.
Mr Fee said: “Steve was very much a key person in our organisation. He’d worked for us for the best part of 10 years. He destroyed trust placed in him.”
Mr Fee said Mr Toomey attended a meeting, during which he admitted CAUGHT: Steve Toomey destroyed trust in him having sex with the girl. He was subsequently dismissed.
In a statement issued on behalf of Courts Community Association, Mr Fee said because the girl was 16 and gave consent no criminal offence had occurred.
He said: “An allegation was made to Humberside Police on Friday July 8, 2016, that Steve had behaved inappropriately with a member of the youth club.
“I suspended Steve immediately pending further investigations and reported the matter to Hull City Council’s social services. Following further investigation it was confirmed that Steve Toomey did have sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old member of the club.
“Our child protection policy and training that he had received makes it clear that a child means up to the age of 18 and that they are to be protected.
“Following a disciplinary hearing, where he acknowledged sexual intercourse with the girl had taken place, he was informed he would be dismissed, but had the right to appeal.
“No appeal was made.”
