THE creator of has told fans they’ll have to wait until 2019 for the next series.

The police drama’s thrilling fourth season pulled in its largest audience yet as the mysterious Balaclava Man was identified to be several people rather than just one culprit.

Writer Jed Mercurio told ITV’s This Morning that viewers will have to play the waiting game before they get the answers to some of the burning questions left unanswered by the finale of the hit BBC show.

The hugely popular BBC show about two supermarke­t employees who share their daily drive saw another wave of success with its recent second season.

But hours before the final episode airs on Tuesday, Kay admitted it was to be the end of the road for the sitcom.

He told BBC Radio Manchester: the cast together. The earliest I can imagine it will be on air is early 2019.”

One of the questions he has promised to answer surrounds PC Maneet Bindra, played by Maya Sondhi, who shocked fans by appearing to betray her colleague in anti-corruption unit AC-12.

And he hinted Supt Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) could suffer the consequenc­es of shooting dead one of the Balaclava Men rather than trying to capture him alive. “There’s not going to be a series three.”

As the shocked presenters tried to persuade him otherwise, he continued: “There’s not... there’s not. You’ve got to get out while the going’s good.”

Kay last year won two Bafta TV awards for the show, including best scripted comedy and best male performanc­e in a comedy programme, for his role as assistant manager John Redmond.
