GUNNED DOWN: Dr Gilbert was shot 10 times in office A RETIRED barber shot a doctor 10 times in revenge for a botched surgery that left him unable to get it up…but shot the wrong man.

Stanwood Elkus, 79, was jailed for life for the murder of his former doctor Ronald Gilbert in his offices in January 2013.

Prosecutors had argued during his murder trial that Elkus had developed an obsession with his health over what he claimed was a botched surgery in 1992 that damaged his prostate.

Elkus blamed his incontinence, erectile dysfunction, diminished sex drive and loss of his long-term girlfriend on the surgery and believed it had ruined his life.

Dr Gilbert was a young medical resident at the time of the surgery and worked with a team of doctors to diagnose Elkus with a urethral stricture.

He was not one of the doctors who performed surgery to widen his urethra.

Elkus was still angry about the op when he drove to Dr Gilbert’s office in Newport Beach, California.

He shot father-of-two Dr Gilbert 10 times when he walked into the room.

Elkus had pleaded not guilty to Dr Gilbert’s murder by reason of insanity. His defence attorney had argued that Elkus has dementia and brain damage, but jurors found he was sane when he killed his victim.

Elkus was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Jurors also agreed on allegations of lying in wait and personal use of a gun, which added an additional 10 years to his sentence.
