The ex-goalkeeper was talking about England winger Raheem Sterling’s controversial tattoo of a machine gun when he compared the Good Morning Britain presenter to a huge Johnson.

The 59-year-old Wales star said: “That was brought up by some prick. Piers Morgan is a prick. What gives him the right to say what can be on your body? If Sterling had tattooed a massive cock on his leg I would say, ‘It reminds me of Piers Morgan’.”

That caused Morgan, 53, to hit back, saying the two-time league winner was not fit to clean Arsenal keeper David Seaman’s gloves.

He said: “I was exercising the same right that Mr Southall has to call me a ‘massive cock’.

“It’s called free speech. To be fair, if I wasn’t good enough to clean David Seaman’s gloves, I’d be this bitter too.”

The Arsenal fan’s response caused an outpouring of support for Southall on Twitter with even rival Liverpool fans backing him.

EuanRCD wrote: “Im a Liverpool fan and @NevilleSouthall is the best British keeper I’ve seen in my lifetime. Easily better than Seaman.”

While Mark McKeown added: “@ NevilleSouthall won football writers award and was a Ballon d’Or nominee, both very rare for keepers – different league to Seaman!”

But Morgan doubled down saying: “Only one of them was called ‘Safe Hands’ & he wasn’t called Neville.”
