SNOOTS said the films and its stars were “past it” when they first came out – but the adventures of Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Barbara Windsor have been making audiences chuckle for 60 years.

is the longest-running British film franchise after James Bond and churned out low-budget laughs from 1958 to 1992.

So to mark diamond anniversary, here are some of the best gags from the series…

(1964) THE Carry On answer to James Bond saw secret agents, Bind and Simpkins – played by Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Williams – on a perilous mission to Vienna. Bind: “Somebody just tried to shoot me.” Simpkins: “Where?” Bind: “In the Schnitzelstrasse.” Simpkins: “Oh, that sounds very painful!”

(1967) BERNARD Bresslaw plays a patient receiving treatment from a nurse played by Anita Harris . Patient: “Nurse, I dreamt about you last night.” Nurse: “Did you?” Patient: “No, you wouldn’t let me.” LUCIOUS Lauren Louise loves playing the role of a naughty nurse – and is on the hunt for a hunky soldier to look after.
