SNOOTS said the films and its stars were “past it” when they first came out – but the adventures of Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Barbara Windsor have been making audiences chuckle for 60 years.

is the longest-running British film franchise after James Bond and churned out low-budget laughs from 1958 to 1992.

So to mark diamond anniversar­y, here are some of the best gags from the series…

(1964) THE Carry On answer to James Bond saw secret agents, Bind and Simpkins – played by Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Williams – on a perilous mission to Vienna. Bind: “Somebody just tried to shoot me.” Simpkins: “Where?” Bind: “In the Schnitzels­trasse.” Simpkins: “Oh, that sounds very painful!”

(1967) BERNARD Bresslaw plays a patient receiving treatment from a nurse played by Anita Harris . Patient: “Nurse, I dreamt about you last night.” Nurse: “Did you?” Patient: “No, you wouldn’t let me.” LUCIOUS Lauren Louise loves playing the role of a naughty nurse – and is on the hunt for a hunky soldier to look after.
