As Linda explains: “Patrick goes really crazy when there’s a fire alarm drill at school. You can’t hold him down. He just starts running.”

Patrick would write letters to his dead dad, asking, ‘ How are you doing in heaven? I love you so much. I miss you, Daddy.’

Even tiny things set Patrick’s nerves on edge.

When Linda bought her son a Buzz Lightyear action figure, he was freaked out by the tiny twist ties that attached it to the box.

They reminded him of the plastic cable ties that had bound his mother and father on that fateful night.

When Tundidor was finally sentenced to death in November 2014, Linda rejoiced in the sentence – the only one that could let her start to rebuild her life.

“Joe would give me bear hugs every day,” she said. “The memories are hard to endure.

“My son and I will forever live a life in prison. We can’t forget the sights, sounds and smells of that night.

“Now we quietly stay indoors. We think the bogeyman is going to come back to finish the job.”

Linda and Joe had met at the Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research in Plantation, Florida, where she had been studying microbiology and he had been conducting research prior to becoming a lecturer at Nova South Eastern University.

Following a whirlwind romance, Joe proposed to Linda in Rome and the pair were married in 1997.

The besotted couple tried for several years to fall pregnant before they finally decided to adopt a child instead.

Joe was everything Patrick could want in a father. A keen waterskier and fisherman, he hand-built his own boat in the garage so he could take his son out on the water with him.

Linda and Joe enjoyed a lifestyle unburdened by money worries, with the pair bringing home in excess of £350,000 a year between them.

But in December 2009,

Joe made a decision that ended up costing him his life – he leased a rental property he owned to Tundidor.

A shady businessman who ran a car window tinting business called Gator Tint, Tundidor moved into the property with his fiancée Hilda, her children and mother, and one of Tundidor’s sons, Shawn.

And he decided that if he did ‘repairs’ on the property, he could reduce his rent payment – despite never asking Joe permission to do so.

When Joe questioned what he was doing, an argument ensued.

It resulted in Joe asking the Tundidors to leave because they were in breach of contract.

Tundidor was wild with rage. He told family members, ‘Nobody f**ks with me and gets away with it’.

He forged a plan with his then 24-year-old son Randy Jr to ‘scare’ Joe.

At around 11pm, the pair slipped into the Morrissey home through an open window.

They proceeded to bind Joe and Linda with cable ties but, mercifully, left Patrick sleeping in his room.

Joe and Linda were then driven at gunpoint to a cash machine and forced to withdraw $500 to give to their captors.
