Irish bishop bashes BBC raunchfest Normal People
SEX ‘MAD’: Protest scene in and Bishop Cox
FLASH HAPPY: Steamy scenes abound in hit show
RAUNCHY Beeb drama
has been hit by a Father Ted-style protest over bedroom scenes.
Devout Irish Catholic bishop Michael Cox has launched an extraordinary attack on the series’ sex scenes.
It comes as main actor Paul Mescal prepares to have his WILLY on display in the latest episode of the hit show.
Co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones has already been seen full-frontal – to the anger of some but delight of many.
In Channel 4’s hit comedy Father Ted, Ted and his curate sidekick Dougal famously protested outside a Craggy Island cinema showing a raunchy flick.
They carried banners saying “Careful now!” and “Down with this sort of thing!” – after secretly watching the film themselves.
In real life, Normal People has been praised and criticised in equal measure – with the “realistic” bedroom action earning many plaudits.
But the show has outraged Bishop Cox in Ireland, where it is being shown by Irish broadcaster RTE.
He stormed: “Morally it is wrong. Showing a grown man fully naked on TV? It would offend any right-minded human being.
“It is outrageous and it should be stopped.”
A show insider said: “If the earlier sex scenes caused ripples of complaints, this will bring a tsunami on RTE.”
Despite a string of complaints, RTE said it would broadcast the entire series unedited.
But Bishop Cox added: “Do I think outrages like these are responsible for the coronavirus? I think people should read the Bible and find out.”
