WILSON TOONS UP FOR SAINTS CHALLENGE
CALLUM Wilson is urging his team-mates to keep their feet on the ground after beating Everton.
Newcastle saw off the then league leaders 2-0 at St James’s Park at the weekend.
Now they face another high flying side in Southampton on Friday night with a chance to break into the top half of the table.
Wilson has hit the ground running since his move from Bournemouth and bagged his fifth and sixth strikes of the season against Everton.
He said: “It will give the boys a lift. Three points always shoots you up the league and 11 points now, it’s something to build from.
“At the minute, there’s a good togetherness about the group and results obviously help with that as well, so this week is going to be a good week.
“It’s a shorter period until our next game, but we’ll be professional, make sure we’ve got our heads screwed on and get ready for Southampton away.”
Fuming
Wilson is already looking like a real bargain for the Toon who paid just £20m to the Cherries for the England international.
And boss Steve Bruce was pleased to see the striker fuming when he was brought off late on against the Toffees.
That scuppered his chances of a rare hattrick and he made his feelings clear.
Bruce said: “He got upset that I took him off with five minutes to go. He’s crucial to us. He’s given us that cutting edge which a goalscorer has.
“To have six already matches, I think, our top scorer last year.
“You can imagine what kind of lift he’s given to everybody.
“I think that’s his second or maybe third goal he’s scored inside the six-yard box.
“He’s there. I think that’s the difference, the instinct. He wants to score a goal.”
Wilson also thinks he is being helped by not having the famous No9 on his back.
That “honour” is with Joelinton and the twogoal man said: “It can add pressure to players who don’t need it. I think Joe experienced that.
“It is quite a heavy number given the great careers some have had.”
