YORKIE TRANSFER A BOOST FOR BESS

- CRICKET By ANDY MILLOM

DOM Bess says moving to Yorkshire can take his game to the next level. The England spinner has gone north from Somerset to get more game time.

The 23-year-old struggled to get a spot at Taunton with Jack Leach also in the squad. That didn’t stop him breaking into the Three Lions side — but things didn’t go to plan in India this winter.

He was dropped from the team despite the Tests being played on turning tracks. Now he’s looking to sort things out with some strong performances for the White Rose county.

Bess said: “I’ve been backed by Yorkshire in terms of coming up here. It’s now up to me to deliver.

“Whatever that looks like day in and day out, and in and around the club, is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Bess is not worried about his modest form with England and insists he has a lot more to offer on the international stage.

He added: “I can only see massive positives from this winter.

“If I lay down the facts now, as a 23-year-old going to the subcontinent, having expectations on you and on yourself, I perhaps didn’t impact games the way I would want to at times.

“But I did impact upon games for England.

“I’m 23 and was sat there watching and playing against Ashwin, who is 33 or 34 playing in his own conditions.

“I was visually seeing how he goes about bowling in such a big game.

“It was a pleasure to be there and learn.”

Moving to Yorkshire means being at the same club as England skipper

Joe Root. That could definitely help his chances of a Test recall this summer and he’s talked to coach Chris Silverwood too.

Bess added: “I understand where I stand with it all when it comes to playing for England.

“I certainly feel backed from these guys, who gave me good feedback in terms of what I need to do.

“That’s all I can ask for, that consistent feedback.

“I know Rooty, Chris Silverwood and the whole team back me in terms of the longer process. I have to buy into that.”
