More motorhomers pre-booking campsites across Europe

-

A survey of 4,000 motorhomers has shown that, since 2019, there’s been a significant jump in the number of motorhomers in The Netherlands, Italy, Germany and France who now book campsites in advance.

Despite this increase, the UK still leads the way with the highest proportion of motorhome owners booking their campsites in advance.

The survey showed that in the UK, 74% of motorhomers prefer to book sites in advance, compared to only 50% of owners in France.

This is perhaps because the same survey showed the number one irritation for motorhome owners across the UK and Europe is finding a campsite is full on arrival.

The survey, by Campercontact, found the largest change in prebooking was in countries such as the Netherlands where, in 2019, only 41% of Dutch motorhome owners had ever booked a site in advance compared to 61% in 2024.

There was also a clear shift in Italy (from 43% to 67% ), but the biggest jump was in Germany (from 36% to 74%), probably reflecting its recent record sales of campervans and motorhomes.

Only the British were accustomed to pre-booking in 2019 (72%), which has remained the highest and most consistent with 74% today. This is in contrast to France, which has the lowest scores of 32% and 50%, respectively.

“This increase in the number of motorhome enthusiasts booking their pitches in advance reflects a changing travel culture,” says Lars Smit, Commercial Director at Campercontact.
