Upper Lynstone Caravan Park, Cornwall

-

It should have taken us 20 minutes to walk into Bude via the South West Coast Path but, in the event, it took almost an hour, as we kept stopping to admire this wild and beautiful stretch of Atlantic coastline from the clifftops.

The coast path can be accessed directly from Upper Lynstone, which lies three-quarters of a mile south of Bude, along the coast road. The familyrun site caters for couples and families (no groups allowed) and offers 65 pitches, both grass and hardstanding, with or without electric hook-up. Static caravans are also available to hire.

Our hardstanding pitch was level and of a generous size with sea views. Despite being so close to bustling Bude, the site is tranquil and surrounded by undulating farmland – all we could hear from our pitch was the crashing of waves against the cliffs.

On site, reception stocks a small range of essentials and there’s also a launderette, shower and toilet blocks, a family bathroom, motorhome service point, chargeable WiFi, dishwashing facilities, children’s play area and even a wetsuit shower – perfect if you plan to take part in watersports.

And Bude offers watersports opportunities aplenty. Aside from swimming in the sea or sea pool, surfing and stand up paddleboarding are popular and tuition is available. Both of the town’s beaches have been awarded a Blue Flag, as has Widemouth Bay, just three miles to the south.

If you prefer stiller waters, then there’s a canal and Bude Marshes Nature Reserve to explore. I enjoyed an idyllic sunny afternoon paddleboarding along the canal watching the ducks and swans swimming along.

Bude boasts plenty of shops, eateries and two supermarkets. There are several car parks dotted around the town and we had no problem finding spaces for our six-metre campervan.
