Oakdown Touring & Holiday Caravan Park, Devon

-

The Devon coast is, without doubt, one of the UK’s finest places to visit in your motorhome or campervan. Unfortunately, that also makes it one of the busiest. So, finding a tranquil campsite away from the crowds can be tricky, especially if you want somewhere with top-notch facilities.

But, tucked away in the rolling Devon countryside – just five minutes’ drive from the beach – I may have found the perfect spot. When it comes to location, amenities and general upkeep, Oakdown ticks all the boxes. And, even though it’s a big site and gets busy at peak times, the landscaped grounds feel like a haven of peace and tranquillity.

As you enter, the reception building looks magnificent, surrounded by trees and well-maintained borders. That is a recurring theme throughout – straight lines are eschewed in favour of gentle curves, spacious groves and secluded enclaves.

It all creates a calm environment where you can kick back and relax after a long drive or following a busy day of sightseeing. The site facilities are top class, starting with the spotless shower

and toilet blocks and the wellappointed laundry and washing-up areas. And, if you bring your dog on holiday, you’ll definitely love the canine cleaning facility – a fully equipped mini-spa, with dog bath, hot water shower and even a doggie hair dryer.

On the opposite side of the road is the second camping field and, as well as another amenities block, this is where you find the nine-hole pitch ‘n’ putt course and the Oak Mead shop and café. We enjoyed the tasty cooked breakfast, and there’s plenty more on the menu. The café also offers a takeaway service. The shop has daily deliveries of fresh bread, croissants and pastries – just make sure you get your order in the day before.

Oakdown is a great base from which to explore the beaches and coves of east Devon’s coast. Access to the South West Coast Path is less than two miles away and the famous Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth is a short walk from the site.
