Volkswagen confirms 2024 plans and new Crafter launch

-

Last year Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV), which makes the Transporter and Crafter vans that are converted by multiple manufacturers into campervans and motorhomes, as well as making its own California campervan, saw profits rise to a record €873m (£745m).

Announcing the results, it laid out a model offensive for the current year, which includes the launch of the new Transporter and the new California, as well as the updated Crafter.

“Almost all models are either new or will receive a noticeable upgrade,” said VWCV CEO, Carsten Intra.

The new Transporter will have its world premiere this autumn.

We have already been treated to the California Concept, which is based on the Multivan and gave a clear hint at what the new California, which will also celebrate its world premiere in 2024, will be like. This new California will also be available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time.

In relation to the latest Crafter, VW confirmed it is launching this across Europe in the coming weeks with presales already starting.

The new model benefits from software and hardware updates and the cockpit has been completely redesigned and now features the latest infotainment systems.

The new ‘Digital Cockpit’ features a multifunction steering wheel, electronic parking brake and various assist systems. A key option is the digital voice assistant with ChatGPT artificial intelligence integration.

The cab includes a 10.3in display (12.9in display is an option). The Crafter will also receive a new online voice control system for many vehicle functions.

The handbrake and the switch for the automatic gearbox have been redesigned, as have controls for the light functions, buttons in the centre console and all vents.

All the new Crafters will have Front Assist (Autonomous Emergency Braking including Cyclist and Pedestrian Monitoring), Lane Assist, Dynamic Road Sign Display, a speed limiter and acoustic Park Distance Control for the rear. Travel Assist will be available as an option.

More details and sterling prices will be confirmed closer to the Crafter’s UK launch.
