Fields End Water Caravan Park, Cambridgeshire

- Claire Tupholme

I visited Fields End Water during a lovely sunny spell that really showed this award-winning campsite off to its very best.

The site holds an AA Campsite of the Year award and is surrounded by Fenland countryside. It is an adultsonly and dog-friendly site set out over several areas. There is a main park with 34 fully serviced pitches, which also includes ‘The Paddock’ with another 18 fully serviced pitches. For those with pets, the Woodside pitches are located in an intimate area of just six fully serviced hardstanding pitches set metres from the on-site wood, which is ideal for walks.

Fields End Water also has three fishing lakes; an ideal pitching location for those who enjoy fishing would be the Waterside area where there are 20 fully serviced hardstandings only three metres from the water’s edge with their own fishing swim. There are also four en suite glamping pods on Waterside if you want to holiday with non-motorhoming friends or family.

You are well catered for with facilities on site, including toilets, showers, a laundry room, motorhome waste point and fenced dog exercise area. There is also a site shop and a lovely lakeside café, both of which are open April to October.

Locally, the village of Doddington is one and a half miles away and can be reached by public footpath (or buses pass the site entrance three times a day with services to Doddington, March and March train station). The village has a couple of pubs, shops and a fish and chip shop. March is the larger town and is six miles away.

I would simply pitch up at Fields End Water and enjoy relaxing amid the tranquil site atmosphere or walking in the woods or by the fishing lakes but, if you did want to explore off-site, it’s a 30-minute drive to the historic city of Ely. Here you can explore the impressive medieval cathedral, browse a range of independent shops, or enjoy a walk along the riverside and then refresh at one of the many quaint cafés.
