Branch lines: part 5
Scotland features some of the most diverse terrain in Britain - begging to be modelled!
Built for: Callander & Oban Railway Worked by (at nationalisation): LMS Terminus: Ballachulish Main line connection: Connel Ferry (Crianlarich-oban line) Opened: August 20 1903 Length of line: 28 miles Intermediate stations: 7 Closed: March 28 1966 Key locomotives you’ll need? Caledonian Railway ‘439’ 0‑4‑4T, BR Class 27 Why’s Ballachulish special? It’s a typical branch line terminus for those who don’t want to model the GWR. It had all the features that are usually packed into the average ‘GWR BLT’ but with a rugged Scottish character to the architecture - and scenery. Its setting, against the backdrop of an abandoned, terraced slate quarry, is also perfect for a layout. What’s left? The station building is now a medical centre, while all other railway structures have been demolished and replaced by housing estates. Where can I find out more? The Callander & Oban Railway, by John Thomas (David & Charles).
