PETROLEUM

-

This part of the business was responsible for many petrol-based and chemical products. Main areas of operation were Humberside, North-west England, North Thames, Grangemouth in central Scotland and long-distance flows from West Wales to Wiltshire and west London. Although relatively small compared to other sectors, the Petroleum fleet was seen far and wide and relied heavily on Class 37/0s and 37/7s, even after the arrival of the Class 60s from 1991. Class 31s were used from Immingham and Crewe-based Class 47/0s and 47/3s were dedicated to Stanlow traffic and given Latin shell names. Immingham’s 08388 carried cast BR arrows, small diamond depot plaques and Petroleum sector vertical flashes (but not full sector logos) from 1989 until 1996.
