George’s suggested upgrade: Choose a version of Heljan’s model with underslung air brake gear and add pipes (brass wire) and valves (plastic rod) for extra realism. A perfect evening job!

Ben’s suggested upgrade: This is arguably Dapol’s best diesel in terms of looks and performance. It is much improved if the detail parts and snowploughs are fitted at one end. You’ll need to cut away the NEM coupler pocket but this is straightforward enough.
