George’s suggested upgrade: Both the superior Heljan and ancient Hornby versions would benefit from a set of etched grilles on the bodyside and roof, courtesy of Shawplan. Pre-owned Hornby models are cheap, but plenty of detailing work is required.

Ben’s suggested upgrade: Another excellent model from Dapol and readily available in Coal sector liveries. Why not add a touch of finesse by renumbering it as a named example, and using a fine etched nameplate from Fox?
