THE MERSEY DOCKS & HARBOUR BOARD (MDHB) FLEET

The MDHB employed a huge variety of locomotive­s, particular­ly during wartime. Highlights include: Ex-lancashire & Yorkshire Railway ‘21’ 0-4-0STS. No. 1 - an Avonside 0-6-0ST built in 1904 and preserved by National Museums Liverpool. No. 26 - another Avonside product, this time a ‘B3’, which was also dubbed the ‘Mersey’ class. No. 34 - a 1911 Hawthorn Leslie acquired from the Shropshire & Montgomery­shire Railway in 1923 and rebuilt from an 0-6-2T into an 0-6-0. Sold in 1927, it has been used to help build Gladstone Dock No. 2 No. 43 - an Andrew Barclay fireless. ‘J63s’ Nos. 5061 and 5157, loaned by LNER to MDHB during the war. Up to ten USATC ‘S100s’, which were in use at the dock in 1944. 0-6-0DM No. 32, delivered by Hunslet to the docks in 1944.
