Nick ballasts his track after he’s crafted the scenery. He believes this approach creates a more effective join between the two. “I spray the track a grimy brown colour before applying the ballast,” he explains. The ballasting process is similar to his method of applying ground cover. Nick continues: “It’s a mixture. I’ll use Woodland Scenics fine ballast, but vary the colours. It’s a cocktail of browns, greys and blacks. The main line and branch line sport slightly different mixes, with the branch line being a bit darker to represent older ballast.”
