All waterslide decals demand a high-gloss surface on which to adhere, so an overall coat of gloss varnish is essential. Mask the glazing and any light lenses with masking fluid.

Remove factory-printed digits by rubbing gently with a cotton swab dipped in a little T-cut Original automotive colour restorer. Buff the surface dry with clean swabs and leave overnight for the solvent to evaporate.

Treat the bodyshell to a few light coats of clear gloss varnish by hand or, preferably, spray from an aerosol or airbrush. Allow to dry completely – gloss finishes often require up to 48 hours.

Clean the surface with a weak isopropyl alcohol (IPA) formula, such as that offered by Bodyart/medea (www.airbrushes.com), to remove traces of oil and grease. Apply with swabs or a soft brush.

Carefully cut around each decal with a sharp pair of scissors and soak one at a time, in clean water, for a few minutes. As soon as the decal begins to work loose, remove from the water.

Micro Set solution, brushed over the glossy surface prior to the decal being applied, will aid adhesion. It also helps the fine carrier film to follow any undulations on the surface.

Place the decal close to its final destination and gently slide into position using the blunted edge of a cocktail stick, while pulling the paper away with fine tweezers.

Re-wet the decal with a soft brush and water if necessary, ensuring that the corners are not curled over. Gently nudge the decal into its final position with the brush.

Carefully soak up the excess moisture with a cotton swab, pressing the decal onto the surface to remove water and air trapped underneath. Check that the decal is still aligned, re-wetting and adjusting if necessary.

Allow to dry overnight before sealing the decals with varnish. After weathering, the masking film can be carefully peeled away. Lift the corner with a cocktail stick and pull away with tweezers.

The use of clear gloss coats before and after decal application, followed by a final satin coat, ensures that the carrier film disappears completely. Precision Labels uses the finest films available.
