Hornby’s train packs are usually inspired by key events of the year, and 2018’s collection is no exception. There are five, and three are inspired by historical events, while the final two commemorat­e the launch and withdrawal of two high-speed favourites:

◆ 85th anniversar­y of the launch of the ‘Brighton Belle’: Pack R3606 contains Motor Third Pullman Cars 92 and 93 in the famous umber and cream livery. RRP: £199.99.

◆ 80th anniversar­y of Mallard’s record run: Pack R3612 contains ‘A4’ No. 4468 Mallard in LNER Garter blue and a replica of the plaque the locomotive subsequent­ly carried to commemorat­e its July 3 1938 126mph record. RRP: £229.99.

◆ 50th anniversar­y of the end of BR standard gauge steam: Pack R3607 contains BR ‘Britannia’ No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell, a Mk 1 brake in BR maroon and two Mk 1 opens in blue/grey to commemorat­e the running of BR’S last standard gauge steam train on August 11 1968. RRP: £229.99.

Launch of IEP: Pack R3609 contains two Class 800/0 power cars in Great Western Railway’s striking green colour scheme to mark the real thing’s entry into revenue-earning service. RRP: £399.99.

End of the HSTS: Pack R3602TTS contains two Intercity-liveried Class 43 power cars (43079 and 43078 Golowan Festival Penzance) to mark the class’ retirement from the Western Region after 40 years of sterling service. RRP: £299.99.
