Faced with the task of evaluating this new epoxy putty, I wanted to show how it could be used for more than simply filling holes in plastic, wood or metal models. Indeed, good quality epoxy putty has many uses for railway modellers, in terms of kit building and modification, but also in terms of scenic work.
Eze Putty, from Deluxe Materials, is a new rapid-curing two-part epoxy putty that is simple to mix and shape. Depending on how thickly the material is formed, it will cure completely after about half an hour, allowing for rapid progress to be made.
In order to test the versatility of this putty, I decided to try creating some lifelike tarpaulins for a couple of ‘OO’ gauge open wagons. This would entail rolling the putty out as thin as possible before transferring it to the wagon, and hoping that it would adhere reliably and prove resilient enough for the model to be handled freely.
Both a loaded and empty wagon were employed, the latter to assess how the putty would cope without internal support. I’m really happy with the results and, once cured and painted, the tarpaulins have proved to be very rugged, as well as looking the part. All they lack is an array of securing ropes, created perhaps with ultra-fine elastic thread (as used on scale biplane models), but that’s a job for another day. After just a couple of hours’ work, these wagon covers have added some extra variety to my freight stock. (GD)
Eze Putty offers a simple way to create tarpaulins for railway wagons, as well as lorry loads and many other scenic situations. 267 November 2019
